The open data portal provides reporting of financial resources allocated to support Office of Broadband projects serving County constituents. The projects detailed below include Public Wi-Fi Mesh sites to residents at community centers, libraries and parks throughout the county; Wi-Fi Buses/Signal Boosters in areas of greatest need; LTE/ 5G sites for students through partnering ISDs and other high need populations; Comcast Internet Essentials which helps underserved families secure internet connectivity to their home at no cost; and unlimited data hotspot connections for 16,000 students from SISD, HISD, and AISD for students and parents alike to connect, work and innovate.
The Office of Broadband received $16.6M of COVID relief funds from Cares Act. Of the $16.6M, $15M was transferred in December 2020 to the newly developed Office of Broadband to deploy strategy and action plan. The remaining $1.6M was received in July 2021 to continue broadband access projects, including expansion of Public Wi-Fi sites and continuation of support for student and family In-home Wi-Fi programs.
